Study: Obesity Can Trim 10 Years Off Life




Being obese can take years off your life and in some cases may be as dangerous as smoking, a new study says. British researchers at the University of Oxford analyzed 57 studies mostly in Europe and North America, following nearly one million people for an average of 10 to 15 years. During that time, about 100,000 of those people died.
The studies used Body Mass Index (BMI), a measurement that divides a person's weight in kilograms by their height squared in meters to determine obesity. Researchers found that death rates were lowest in people who had a BMI of 23 to 24, on the high side of the normal range.
Health officials generally define overweight people as those with a BMI from 25 to 29, and obese people as those with a BMI above 30.

The study was published online Wednesday in the medical journal, Lancet. It was paid for by Britain's Medical Research Council, the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and others.
"If you are heading towards obesity, it may be a good idea to lose weight," said Sir Richard Peto, the study's main statistician and a professor at Oxford University.

Peto and colleagues found that people who were moderately fat, with a BMI from 30 to 35, lost about three years of life. People who were morbidly fat — those with a BMI above 40 — lost about 10 years off their expected lifespan, similar to the effect of lifelong smoking.

Moderately obese people were 50 percent more likely to die prematurely than normal-weight people, said Gary Whitlock, the Oxford University epidemiologist who led the study.
He said that obese people were also two thirds more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke, and up to four times more likely to die of diabetes, kidney or liver problems. They were one sixth more likely to die of cancer.
"This really emphasizes the importance of weight gain," said Dr. Arne Astrup, a professor of nutrition at the University of Copenhagen who was not linked to the Lancet study. "Even a small increase in your BMI is enough to increase your risks for cardiovascular disease and cancer."

Previous studies have found that death rates increase both above and below a normal BMI score, and that people who are moderately overweight live longer than underweight or normal-weight people.
Other experts said that because the papers used in the study mostly started between 1975 and 1985, their conclusions were not as relevant today.

Astrup worried that rising obesity rates may reverse the steep drops in heart disease seen in the West.
"Obesity is the new dark horse for public health officials," he said. "People need to be aware of the risks they're taking when they gain weight."

Thanks much to Brian for submitting his story. Brian weighed 345 pounds in April of last year. Today he weighs 175 pounds! It's an amazing achievement.

To start off, i can't ever remember where weight wasn't an issue for me. I've always been bigger, overweight, doctors and parents telling me that i should look towards losing weight. For whatever reason, i didn't think it was that serious.

Even as a bigger kid, i was able to be active in sports, fit myself (and stomach) into desks and chairs, practically living life as a "normal" person. My parents often reminded me that i am still gaining weight and look bigger. Just as every other overweight person who is in denial, i never stepped on a scale unless it was required through something like a physical at the doctor's office.

The day came that i realized that as much as i tried to fool myself, i could no longer consider my weight as normal. I stepped onto the balance board for Wii Fit, a game designed for people to lose weight, only to come to the conclusion that i was not allowed to play the game because i surpassed the 330lb limit that is designed by the software. Not being able to play a video game, now that is definitely NOT normal.

This event triggered my journey towards weight loss. In April of 2011, i took the first steps in losing weight by finally addressing the major cause towards my weight, my diet. I began researching and looking and obsessing about how to lose weight, weight loss success stories, and the keys to losing weight. I began to change my diet and starting to seriously start looking at calories, nutrition, and activity. I started pushing myself towards taking things one step at a time with the simple goal of wanting to become "normal".

At this point in time, i have lost close to 170lbs. I still have some more work to do but a lot of my focus has now shifted towards keeping my fitness up while trying to build muscle and tone up. I want to continue to challenge myself, continue to push myself in doing things i never dreamed of doing, leading me to make the decision to challenge

Introduction to weight loss




Whether you are trying to lose 5 pounds or more than 50, the same principles determine how much weight you lose and how fast your weight loss will occur. Remembering the following simple guidelines and putting them into practice can lead to weight loss without the aid of any special diet plans, books, or medications.
Our body weight is determined by the amount of energy that we take in as food and the amount of energy we expend in the activities of our day. Energy is measured in calories. If your weight remains constant, you are probably taking in the same amount of calories that you burn each day. If you're slowly gaining weight over time, it is likely that your caloric intake is greater than the number of calories you burn through your daily activities.
Everyone is in control of the amount of food he or she consumes each day, so our intake of calories is something we can control. To a major degree, we can also control our output of energy, or the number of calories we burn each day. The number of calories we burn each day is dependent upon
·  our basal metabolic rate (BMR), the number of calories we burn per hour simply by being      alive and maintaining body functions
·  and our level of physical activity.
For some people, due to genetic (inherited) factors or other conditions, the resting metabolic rate (BMR) can be slightly higher or lower than average. Our weight also plays a role in determining how many calories we burn at rest -- the more calories are required to maintain your body in its present state, the greater your body weight. A 100-pound person requires less energy (food) to maintain body weight than a person who weighs 200 pounds.
Lifestyle and work habits partially determine how many calories we need each day. Someone whose job involves heavy physical labor will naturally burn more calories in a day than someone who sits at a desk most of the day (a sedentary job). For people who do not have jobs that require intense physical activity, exercise or increased physical activity can increase the number of calories burned.
As a rough estimate, an average woman 31-50 years of age who leads a sedentary lifestyle needs about 1,800 calories per day to maintain a normal weight. A man of the same age requires about 2,200 calories. Participating in a moderate level of physical activity (exercising three to five days per week) requires about 200 additional calories per day.

How do you lose weight?


The most effective method for weight loss is reducing the number of calories you consume while increasing the number of calories you burn through physical activity. To lose 1 pound, you need an expenditure of approximately 3,500 calories. You can achieve this either by cutting back on your food intake, by increasing physical activity, or ideally, by doing both.
For example, if you consume 500 extra calories per day for one week without changing your activity level, you will gain 1 pound in weight (seven days multiplied by 500 calories equals 3,500 calories, or the number of calories resulting in a 1-poundweight gain). Likewise, if you eat 500 fewer calories each day for a week or burn 500 calories per day through exercise for one week, you will lose 1 pound.

How fast should you expect to lose weight?

Most experts agree that a safe, healthy rate of weight loss is one to 1 ½ pounds per week. Modification of eating habits along with regular exercise is the most effective way to lose weight over the long term. It is also the ideal way to ensure that the weight stays off.
Starvation diets may result in rapid weight loss, but this weight loss is almost impossible to maintain for most people. When food intake is severely restricted (below approximately 1,200 calories per day), the body begins to adapt to this state of poor nutrition by reducing its metabolic rate, potentially making it even more difficult to lose weight. It is also possible to experience hunger pangs, bouts ofhypoglycemia, headaches, and mood changes from overly stringent dieting. These symptoms can result in binge eating and weight gain. Since a highly restrictive diet is almost impossible to maintain for a long time, people who attempt to starve themselves thin often start to gain weight again when they stop dieting.

Let's look at an example of a successful no-diet weight loss program.


A 45-year-old woman complains that she has gradually put on 12 pounds over the past year. In the last month, she's faced a stressful work deadline and added another 4 pounds to her frame.
This individual's goal is to lose the 16 pounds she has gained. Since her weight has been gradually increasing, she knows that she is consuming more calories than she is burning, especially with her sedentary job. She decides that a weight loss of 1 pound per week (equal to a deficit of about 3,500 calories, or cutting 500 calories per day) would be acceptable and would allow her to reach her goal in about four months.
She decides to make some changes that will allow her to cut back an average of 250 calories per day.

Regardless of the reason for weight loss there are a few things that must happen so you can lose that weight. Most workouts include some kind of cardio and even on the days when you are tired and can't push anymore you still push yourself. You may be dripping with sweat and have yet to see any weight loss but you still push forward. The same thing happens in your business.

A lot of times when we start our business our goals could be different. Some working moms yearn for flexibility; others want to spend more time with their kids. However I think it's safe to say that we all want control and independence, but regardless of your reasons, passions and desires are we all go in expecting to make money. After all making the money is what's going to give use our desires. So we do this and we try that but nothing seams to give us the results we are looking for (money). We may achieve some results but it's not long lasting. We end up into a slump, we try different tactics but quickly realize those methods aren't working because we haven't made any money. But maybe it's not the method that's not working but maybe you are looking at the wrong results.


Growing your business is a lot like losing weight. The goal for losing weight is to see the scale move, while the goal for being in business it to make money. But on your journey to reach your goals there are other results we should pay attention to that will let us know that our big goal is near. For example, when I first started my weight loss journey I started with the Insanity DVDs. Now I don't recommend anyone to start with that, boy did it kill me. The first day I was tired, out of breath, and extremely sweaty after each workout. The next day my body was in so much pain, that I wondered if I really wanted to continue. Because of the pain and the sweat (and the goodnight sleep) I received from working out I continued. I mean after all something is going on with my body right? If I would have jumped on the scale that first day I pretty sure the scale would not have changed. So I continued with the workouts for the week and at the end of the week I weight myself. Nothing!! There was no change on the scale. But my husband kept telling me how great I looked. I continued for another week and my clothes started to get loser but when I jumped on that scale I saw no movement. I didn't understand what was going on. Can I really get smaller without losing the weight? But I knew something was going on. I was getting results. I started to feel stronger every day, I was sleeping better, my clothes were indeed getting smaller but I wasn't losing the weight. Now if I only paid attention to my main goal which was to see the numbers on the scale go down I probably would have given up, but because I was seeing other results I just knew that scale would move eventually and by week three the scale moved.

Now there could have been other reasons for the scale not moving but I want you to know that growing your business is a lot like this. When we think about "Growing our Business" we usually think about how much money is in our account, or how many sales we are making. But in the beginning of growing your business there are other signs and results we need to pay attention to before we make that sale. If you have read my bio you know that I have decided to take things back a bit. Back to what I know really works and basically start from scratch. And the things that I'm currently doing will give me the sweat, additional energy, and bigger clothes in my business. I currently blog regularly, send out newsletters and use social media daily.


By using all of that I can grow my business and achieve the income that I'm looking for but since I'm in the beginning stage I'm paying attention to the clues that will let me know the steady cash is near. Some additional results you may want to look for when using these techniques are comments and length of time on your blog. This will let you know that people are reading, and absorbing your content. You also want to monitor engagement on social media. Are people retweeting, liking, or talking to you on twitter and Facebook. As these results increase then you will begin to see your sales increase but it will not happen unless you start with the basics. Just like you will not lose weight unless your start with exercise and nutrition.
